Content

In this seminar, we approach the topic of »Martial Arts« particularly from a social and cultural science perspective. We take a closer look at the tension between contemporary combat sports and traditional styles, as well as their significance for social innovation. The focus is especially on Mixed Martial Arts and Capoeira as two poles of combative practices between cooperation and confrontation. Analytical categories such as body, »violencer«, and play are of particular importance.

In line with an embodied teaching approach à la Turner, practical units for self-experience are planned. Participants are invited to contribute their own experiences and to look beyond their own horizons to become aware of new aspects. The reading list is kept short, but more material is available for those interested.

Due to our premises, we are limited to eight participants. Participants need basic knowledge of academic work, preferably from areas such as ethnology, philosophy, sociology, sports sciences, educational sciences, or psychology. Previous experience in martial arts, self-defense, martial arts, and/or dance is desirable but not necessary.

Let’s shed a little more light on the field of Martial Arts Studies, which has been little researched so far, and explore the educational potentials and risks of the field.
