Christian Köhler-Warmbrunn

Life

Christian Köhler-Warmbrunn (* October 14, 1981 in Dessau, Germany; birth name Christian Köhler) is a German ethnologist, philosopher, and martial arts instructor. He is active as a social entrepreneur and publicist at Culture Academy e. V..

Köhler-Warmbrunn has practiced various martial arts since 1992 and increasingly engaged with their sociocultural integration during his studies in ethnology and philosophy at the Martin Luther University Halle (MLU) under Prof. Dr. Thomas Hauschild. Since 2005, he has been a founding member of the Culture Academy e. V., a cultural, sports, and educational association, and actively involved in its organization and development.

His master’s thesis ( Citation: Köhler 2015 Köhler, C. (2015). Capoeira. Körper, Flow Und Erzählung Im Afro-Brasilianischen Kampftanz. Tectum. ) dealt with viscerally encoded foundations of social relationships and low-threshold enlightenment potentials within Afro-Brazilianin the martial dance Capoeira. For his fieldwork in Salvador da Bahia, he received a research grant from the DAAD. The work was revised and published as a monograph.

Köhler-Warmbrunn further developed the original approach of the corporeal practical cultivation of emotion and world relation in his dissertation ( Citation: Köhler-Warmbrunn 2025 Köhler-Warmbrunn, C. Ethnographische Perspektiven Auf Leiblichkeit, Emotion Und Bildung in Den Martial Arts & Combat Sports . ) into a general theory of the phenomenological connection between movement, cognition, and humanistic education. For his doctorate, he received a research grant from the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Based on his research findings, he developed open standards of civically responsible educational work in the Martial Arts & Combat Sports (MACS), namely Capoeira and Mixed Martial Arts, as chairman and scientific director of the Culture Academy. These are applied in the educational concept of the association as well as in interdisciplinary personal training.

Work

Köhler-Warmbrunn’s perspective on combative body practices in Martial Arts & Combat Sports (MACS) are significantly influenced by Capoeira Angola, which frames combat through playful aspects. This allows for a departure from hegemonic discourses about winning and losing and paves the way for considering the practices under emotional and character-building aspects. Play as an instrument of humanistic education and the philosophical anthropology of emotions are at the forefront.

Köhler-Warmbrunn’s philosophical position is influenced by the universalism of Immanuel Kant, the philosophical anthropology of Helmuth Plessner, and phenomenological aspects. His empirically based research emphasizes the brave-emotional aspects of Enlightenment thought and the integration of emotion through combative body practices.

Training Approach

Köhler-Warmbrunn’s teaching approach in body practice is characterized by interdisciplinarity between various cultural and bodily practices as well as Transdisciplinarity between academic teaching and civil society engagement. The focus is particularly on transferring knowledge from physical exercises beyond the scope of the actual practices into other areas of life. In this process, cultural-practical skills are enriched through reflection methods, such as those used in Systemic Therapy. The conceptual work is supported by Systemic Therapist Nadin Warmbrunn (wife) and documented within the educational work of the cultural, sports, and science association Culture Academy e. V..
